Securisation of Vienna New

On the 31st of December 2018, approximately 800,000 people visited downtown Vienna for 12 hours of entertainment to celebrate the New Year’s Eve. The security forces requested an aerial vantage point in the city center where a crane, or other semi permanent installation was not practical, and the use of helicopters was dismissed due to cost, noise and limited endurance. The Vienna city authorities selected Gecko4K to provide persistent aerial surveillance of the event to help prevent incidents and anticipate interventions if needed.

In order to have an uninterrupted thermal video feed during the entire event, we needed extended flight time. Safe-T was the best choice for us. The tethered solution enables new possibilities for security and surveillance.

Bernhard Koderle, Gecko4K pilot

Solution

Tethered to Elistair Safe-T station, Gecko4K’s DJI M200 hovered up to 60m above ground. It benefited from uninterrupted power supply and from a physical connection to the ground preventing possible flyaway. No changes to the existing infrastructure was required to operate the equipment The tether station is easily transportable and has a small footprint when in use.

Result of the the Mission

The command post was based 2km from the city center, where constant video feed from the uav was streamed. Footpaths, public areas and entry/exit points around the main stage were covered. The illegal use of fireworks were also detected from the infrared feed. The crowd was efficiently monitored, and any areas of risk to public safety were easily identified.
